Unlike the Attorney General of the United States – which is a political appointment position – most states, like Illinois, independently elect the AG. This means that the AG serves the electorate and the state constitution and laws, not the governor or any other elected official. Shestokas shares his view on how that position can be used to protect citizens from authoritarian abuses of power and dereliction of duty such as the people of Illinois have experienced under the near-despotic first term of Governor J.B. Pritzker.
